○date: Friday, January 19th, 2018, 6th & 7th Period
○place: Ehime University Senior High School
○participants: The whole 11th grade
○lecturer: Mr. SUZUKI Satoru, Professor, Laboratory of Marine Molecular Ecology, Ehime University

Students received a lecture on the subject of “Drug-resistant microorganisms — drug-resistant bacteria threatening the world—”. They learned drug-resistant bacteria and the issues in the lecture. Microorganisms are something familiar to human beings because they are present in the human body. Since microbism, infection with microbes is among the top 3 killers of low-income countries, the disease is one of the top priority issues for mankind that need to be addressed. Human beings have developed various antibiotics for many years to fight against bacteria, but drug-resistant bacteria have been increasing all the more for extensive use of antibiotics in the fields of veterinary and farming. The number of deaths caused by drug-resistant bacteria is estimated to be above that of deaths from cancer within 30 years.
Students deepened their understanding and broadened their perspectives about microbism through discussions in groups. They discussed what knowledge and measures are needed to deal with the issues from both hardware and software perspectives after learning countermeasures which are being taken throughout the globe.
