‘Iyo-education’ class in the theme of “Weather forecast in space”

○date                             Wednesday, August 26, 2015    13:10 ~ 15:10

○location                        Ehime University High-school, Multipurpose study room

○participants                  10th graders

○lecturer                         Faculty of Science, Ehime University   Associate professor Toru Shimizu

The theme of today’s lecture went beyond global scale, it was about space. He explained to us about the Research Center for Space Cosmic Evolution, astronomical phenomena familiar to us, the road to orbit insertion, and the charms of space and the activities of researchers through “Hayabusa”.

The theme seemed a little bit difficult because it was about space. Although it wasn’t as difficult as I imagined because I have already studied about space a little when I was in junior high-school. By listening to today’s lecture, I was surprised to know about the way the sun burns. I learned that the sun burns because hydrogen crashes into each other in a chain reaction. I never even come to think about the way sun burns until today and just thought that the sun is something that is hot. From now on, I want to be more interested in the things around me and question them.

I learned a lot of new things about space, especially about the sun and satellites. What was the most interesting was the talk about satellites. I never thought about how satellites reach into space. I was surprised to know that the speed of the rocket differs between when it’s close to the earth and when it’s close to the sun. I was also astonished about the fact that when the satellites fly, its parts are uncoupled little by little starting from the bottom and that is is made quite simply in order to make it easy when fixing them. I want to know more about space and satellites. I also want to watch the movie about “Hayabusa”.

We learned about “Weather forecast in space” by Mr.Shimizu from the Faculty of Science. For starters, I was surprised to know that the sun that we are seeing is the sun 8 minutes ago. The reason for this is because the distance between the sun and earth is 1.5 billion km. I was astonished by the monumental scale. I also learned that the sun is mortal just like us. It was strange because I thought that the sun would burn forever. I felt that I have to keep an eye on my daily life after listening to today’s lecture about the earth and the sun. I thought that it might be possible that we are giving a bad influence to the earth and space. I was able to think about what we can act on from now on.
