Prof. Yamamoto was invited as an instructor. First, students thought about two major themes, “Culture and civilization in the midst of globalization” and “Problems behind global companies” through his lecture. Students expressed their opinions after discussing on the theme of “What are the problems behind globalization?” in a group setting. Various opinions were proposed in terms of industry, labor, religion and culture.
Next, the instructor showed concerns that global civilization may destroy individual cultures referring to Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s iPhones. Students learned that many people generally think globalization should be promoted, but we should look at the negative aspects of globalization.
Finally, the lecturer concentrated students’ attention on the differences between “culture” and “civilization” showing the origins of the English words “cultivate” and “civil”. Students learned how to live in the midst of globalization after understanding and considering risks of globalization.
